General appearance

The German Shepherd Dog is a dog of medium size, slightly stretched body, strong, well muscled, with dry bones and overall structure firm.

Important measurements and proportions:
The height at the withers for males: 60 - 65 cm in females: 55 - 65 cm. Length of body exceeds the height measurement of the cross for about 10 to 17%.

Head:
is shaped like a wedge, and is in proportion to body length (its length is approximately 40% of the height of the cross), and not look or coarse or elongated. In general appearance should be dry and moderately broad between the ears. View from the front and sides, the forehead is slightly arched, with or without a median furrow slightly marked.

The ratio of cranial and facial region is 50% to 50%. The width of the cranial region is almost equal to its length. View from above, the skull tapers evenly from the ears to the nose, leaving a fronto-nasal depression is not very noticeable and leaning on the muzzle is wedge shaped. The upper and lower jaws are strongly developed. The nose is straight, any bulge or sag is undesirable. The lips, dark in color, are firm and well bonded.

Nose:

Should be black.

Teeth:
Should be strong, healthy and complete (42 teeth corresponding to the teeth formula). The German Shepherd Dog has a scissors bite, so that the upper incisors cover the lower ones in close contact. A level bite, a higher or lower prognathism and large spaces between the teeth (gaps) are faults. Equally faulty is straight alignment of all the incisors. Maxillary and mandibular bones must be strongly developed so that the teeth are deeply embedded in the dental arch.

Eyes:
Medium size, almond shaped, obliquely placed and never sobresalientres. Its color should be as dark as possible. Light eyes are undesirable and that piercing affect the expression of the dog.

Ears:
The German Shepherd Dog is medium sized ears, erect, open, and carried forward evenly (or overturned or carried sideways). They pointed to the flag led to the front. Ears bent at the tip or falls are defective. Ears thrown back, moving or at rest, not taken as needed.

Neck:
The neck should be strong, well muscled and without dewlap. Its angle with the body (horizontally) is approximately 45 °.

Body:
The top line runs continuously from the implementation of the neck over the well defined withers and over the back very slightly sloping to the rump, also slightly tilted. The back is firm, strong and well muscled. The loin is broad, strongly developed and well muscled. The rump should be long, sloping slightly (about the 13th of the horizontal line) and continue toward the line of the queue without interrupting the top line.

Chest:
Moderately broad with the sternum as long as possible and well marked. Depth of chest should be 45-48% of the height at the withers. The ribs should be moderately rounded. The barrel-shaped chest or be considered a fault plane.

Tail:
Arrive at least to the hock but not more than half of the metatarsus. His hair is longer on the bottom. At rest, the pendant has a slight curve. When the dog is in motion or at attention, the tail is carried higher, but not above the horizontal line. Corrective operations are forbidden.

TIPS

Forelegs:
Seen from all sides, the forelegs are straight, seen from the front, absolutely parallel. The shoulder blade and upper arm are of equal length, firmly attached to the body through a well muscled. The ideal angle between the blade and the arm is 9Oo, but generally 110th. The elbows must be neither turned inward nor outward, with the dog at rest or in motion. The forearm, seen from either side, straight and parallel to each other, dry and well muscled. The pastern has a length of approximately 1 / 3 of the forearm and with it forms an angle of approximately 20-22nd. A pastern too steep (over 22o) or too straight (less than 20o) impairs the dog's working ability, especially their resistance.

Front feet:
Rounded, compact, with arched toes. The pads should be firm but not brittle. The nails are strong and dark.

Hindquarters:
The position of the hindlimbs, viewed from behind parallel to each other, should be slightly tucked. The thigh and leg are almost the same length and form an angle of about 120th. The thighs are strong and well muscled. The hocks are strong and firm, the metatarsus is perpendicular under the hock.

Feet:
Compact, slightly arched, dark pads hard, nails strong, arched and also dark.

MOTION:

The German Shepherd Dog is a trotter. The angle and length of leg must be so related that, without noticeable alteration of the top line, the dog can push the rear end under the entire length of the body and reach the same distance above. Any tendency to over-angulation of the hindquarters reduces firmness and endurance, and, consequently, the ability of the dog to its usefulness. Correct structural proportions and angulations result in a long-range walking flat on the ground that gives the impression of effortless locomotion. Head thrust forward and tail slightly raised result in a quiet and smooth trot, showing a smooth and unbroken curved line that runs from the tips of the ears on the neck and back, to the tip of the tail.

Skin:
It should be comfortably tight, not wrinkly.

COAT:

Hair Features:
The correct coat German Shepherd Dog is a double coat (Stockhaar) with undercoat. The outer coat should be as dense as possible, straight, harsh and close fitting. The head and even the inside of the ears, parts of legs, feet and toes are provided with short hairs; in the neck, the hair is slightly longer and denser. In the back of the legs, the hair is longer up to the pasterns and tarsal The coat is "pants" moderate back of the thighs.

Color:
Black with brown markings reddish-brown, yellow and even gray, completely black or gray gray dogs are black tinged with cloak and a black mask. Are tolerated but not desirable discrete white spots on the chest, and very light color on the internal parts. In all types of color, the nose should be black. Dogs without a mask, clear eyes and expression penetrating, clear or whitish spots on the chest and in the inner parts as well as bright claws and a red-white on the tip of the tail are considered lacking in pigment. The undercoat has a light gray tone. The color white is not allowed.

Size and Weight:
Males: Height at withers: 60 - 65 cm
Weight: 30 - 40 kg
Bitches: Height at withers: 55 - 60 cm
Weight: 22 - 32 kg
